Most of the children at the Tabanovce refugee and migrant transit centre have escaped war inflicted areas, violence or persecution. Some have left behind their closest family members, others their closest friends. All of them have one thing in common. They have all had their education disrupted.

Refusing to risk her life, the life of the baby growing inside her and the lives of her mother and her brother, 20 years old Syrian Hiba Jnaid opted not to board a small and overcrowded rubber boat — a decision that got her stranded later on in the Balkans. Her husband boarded one of them and reached Germany before the border closed.

Poverty, illiteracy and early deaths await world’s most disadvantaged children

Based on current trends, 69 million children under five will die from mostly preventable causes, 167 million children will live in poverty, and 750 million women will have been married as children by 2030, unless the world focuses more on the plight of its most disadvantaged children.
