When the militia attacked, the East Timorese youth were not afraid. They said in their hearts, "Live or Die, we must have Independence". Even though they were going through torture. Some were killed and some were raped. I feel very sad illustrating the tragedy experienced by the East Timorese people. At the time, the shooting everywhere traumatised the people. Some ran to the church or the convents and some went straight to Dare. Perhaps you would call this East Timor bathed in blood; and the entire city of Dili was burnt. All of us, the entire East Timor population, appeal to the political elite: we don't want more bloodshed. Gil de Deus Lay
