The Oak Tree

by Nathaniel Jensen

Ode to the Oak

You give acorns that feed squirrels in winter.
Your leaves turn to mulch and feed the soil.
Your seeds are helicopters on a mission to sow.
Growing tall all through our youth,
you're remembered by our parents.

We think you're a friend to our community

Information about this Tree

The Oak Tree

Where it grows
along our streets. We have a cooler climate
Leaves
thinner near the stem, then lobes to a broader tip
Trunk
can be very wide. Not as tall as palm trees
Bark
not shaggy, but not smooth.
Roots
seem very big and deep to hold up such a large tree
Flowers
none
Fruit
acorns
Seeds
in "propellers"
Special features
The seeds spin down like whirly birds
Birds, animals or insects that use the tree
Squirrels love the acorns and so do the ducks and wild parrots
How people use the tree
people have used the wood from oak trees to make furniture like tables. It also blocks the sun in the summer and lets it through in the winter (because the leaves fall)
