Children with disability in Rasht, a remote district of Tajikistan, finally have access to rehabilitation services
RASHT, 1 June 2014 – Today, on the occasion of the International Child Protection Day, Civil Society Organisation “Zarshedabonu” together with the Agency on Social Protection of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population, Local Authority of Rasht District and UNICEF inaugurated a Rehabilitation Day Care Centre “Anisa” in Rasht District.
“Anisa” is the first Day Care Centre opened in Rasht to provide rehabilitation services for children with disabilities. This initiative aims to increase accessibility to quality social and rehabilitation services for children with disabilities and help their families to integrate their children into society. Children with disabilities will be supported to grow up with their families in their communities and will be prepared to study in mainstream kindergartens and schools.
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population allocated funds to recruit staff and provided the space for the Centre.
UNICEF, within the Human Security Trust Fund of the United Nations, will provide support for building the capacity of the centre’s staff, particularly in:
· identifying, assessing and delivering rehabilitation services for children with disabilities;
· raising awareness of the local officials on disability and importance of inclusion of children with disabilities;
· procuring cognitive and rehabilitation equipment to support rehabilitation.
CSO Zarshedabonu will manage the Day Care Centre, train staff on working with children with disabilities, and will carry out awareness raising activities on rights of children with disabilities at the district level.
