Ministry of Education and UNICEF launch the National Handwashing campaign to celebrate the Global Handwashing Day
The General Assembly of the United Nations designated the year 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation and since then, 15th October, the Global Handwashing Day has echoed and reinforced its call for improved hygiene practices.
Tajikistan, along with other countries of the world, celebrates the Global Handwashing Day. Since 2008, the Ministry of Education and UNICEF are providing support to various events for youth and schoolchildren, including raising public awareness through media communication and other activities.
In the framework of this campaign, UNICEF has supported the Ministry of Education in producing and broadcasting of video and radio spots, teaching children as well as their parents to wash hands with soap, especially before cooking, eating and feeding children and after using the toilet. Through nationwide television and radio channels, these simple but powerful messages will reach almost six million people in Tajikistan.
“Handwashing with soap is a very simple act, but it has extraordinary results for children’s health, growth and development,” added Laylee Moshiri, UNICEF Representative in Tajikistan. “Handwashing with soap is among the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent diarrhea, pneumonia and acute respiratory diseases.”
The handwashing promotion campaign is part of wider efforts of the Ministry of Education and UNICEF to bring safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene to schools in Tajikistan. Since 2003, UNICEF has supported the Ministry of Education in bringing safe drinking water and improved sanitation to more than 400 schools across Tajikistan. Hygiene education has been an integral part of this effort that has benefited more than 250 thousand schoolchildren throughout the country.
