Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) technologies are many and varied, and it can be difficult for field staff to decide which are the most appropriate and affordable tool for the job at hand.
The WASH TIPs are a practical set of guidelines and tools to help you make the best choice.*
The TIPs focus on the following WASH technologies:
1. Hand pumps for drinking water
2. Boreholes and drilling equipment for rural water supply
3. Solar powered pumping
4. Motorized and small piped systems
5. Faecal sludge emptying equipment
How to use:
The TIPs are presented as a single pdf file, along with a folder of linked Excel spreadsheets giving selection tools and Bills of Quantity. You can navigate these online here. (PDF)
Alternatively, you may want to download the TIPs to your own computer. If so, to be sure of everything working properly, you must first download this zip file.
When prompted, save the zip file to a preferred location on your computer. You can then extract the files by right-clicking and choose extract to folder.
Please note that both the pdf and zip versions of the TIPs have large file sizes, approx. 13mb which may result in long download times depending on your internet connection speed.
UNICEF would like these tools to be shared as widely as possible. We are happy for them to be reproduced wherever they can be of use, we ask only that UNICEF is credited as the source.
* The options presented in the TIPs by no means cover all possible alternatives.
