Procuring supplies for children
Mosquito nets
UNICEF is one of the largest buyers of mosquito nets in the world, procuring 18 million in 2007, the majority of them long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), which now constitute over 92 per cent of UNICEF’s bednet procurement. The organization procured nets worth $116 million in 2007.
Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been developed in response to the low re-treatment rates of conventional insecticide-treated nets, especially in Africa. A long-lasting net is a ready-to-use, pre-treated mosquito net, which requires no further treatment during its expected life span. This is the preferred choice of mosquito nets for UNICEF-supported programmes. UNICEF estimates that 30 to 40 million LLINs will be required annually in the coming years. Plans to scale up production, thanks in part to technology transfers, notably from Japan to Africa, and new technologies are in the pipeline. A home treatment kit that can transform an ordinary net into a LLIN, could also help bridge shortfalls.
As procurement is successfully transferred from UNICEF to the government concerned, the number of nets procured by UNICEF is now falling from its peak of 25 million in 2006.
