Mosquito nets
UNICEF is one of the largest buyers of mosquito nets in the world, delivering over 19 million long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) (one third of the world's total) to 48 countries in 2008.
LLINs have been developed in response to the low re-treatment rates of conventional insecticide-treated nets, especially in Africa. A long-lasting net is a ready-to-use, pre-treated mosquito net, which requires no further treatment during its expected life span. This is the preferred choice of mosquito nets for UNICEF-supported programmes. The global community aims to achieve universal bednet coverage in endemic countries by the end of 2010. In 2009, it is forecast that UNICEF will procure as many as 35 million LLINs. The scale up of production includes technology transfers, notably from Japan to Africa.
UNICEF Supply Division is hosting the annual LLINs - Suppliers’ Meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.
