Earthquake/ Tsunami in the Indian Ocean Region

Supply Division’s emergency response activities after the tsunami disaster started on 27th December, and from that time the warehouse began a protracted period of working seven days a week to pack and send supplies. Between 26th and 31st December, the Division sent three cargo flights to Sri Lanka and Indonesia from its warehouse in Copenhagen and supply hub in Dubai. One of these flights was provided free-of-charge by the Belgian Air Force. These shipments, worth $210,000, contained 19 emergency health kits (to cover 190,000 people), tarpaulins, tents, 150,000 sachets of oral rehydration salts, 100 school-in-a-box kits (for 8,000 children), 90 recreation kits, and some medicines. The response to the tsunami is expected to dominate Supply Division’s emergency agenda during the first months of 2005.
