Dubai shows how it cares, investing in Sudan's education systems
May 2008: Launched on 19 September, 2007 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Cares has evolved as the world’s largest charitable establishment solely devoted to improving primary education around the world. In Sudan, Dubai Cares is supporting UNICEF with a two-year contribution worth nearly US$6.3 million, to strengthen capacity in education, as part of its drive to educate one million children in developing countries around the world.

Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, Chairperson of Dubai Cares Board of Directors The main focus of the Sudan initiative will be to support construction of 200 classrooms in 2008, in addition to procuring education kits containing teaching instruments, and school bags which will be distributed to primary school children in some of Southern Sudan’s 3,100 learning spaces. The partnership with UNICEF will also see enhanced training for 200 teachers, while 250 school heads and Parent-Teacher Committee chairpersons will receive training in co-management.
