September 24, 2011 - Children join Sudan celebration for International Peace Day
Omdurman, Sudan - Hundreds of schoolchildren joined government officials and other dignitaries to mark the International Day of Peace organized recently by the Ministry of Youth and Sport and the National Council for Child Welfare (NCCW) with the support of UNICEF.
The celebration was held at the Youth and Children’s Palace in Omdurman under the auspices of the Minister of Youth and Sports Mr. Hag Magid Siwar, and the Secretary-general of the NCCW, Gamar Habani.
Dancers and singers performed for the audience, while other children created paintings and other work with the theme of peace.
The celebration aimed to raise awareness about the risks of wars and its implications in terms of the loss of children’s rights.
Addressing the gathering, UNICEF Representative, Nils Kastberg, said Sudanese children would have no chance of receiving an education, staying healthy or finding work unless peace returned to the country.
“You cannot protect children unless you stop war”, he said. “Sudan should focus on the protection of children and youth because they are the rising generation of the second republic of Sudan.”
