‎7 December 2008 – News note: Sudan Common Pipeline appeals for US$16.47 ‎million to support emergency preparedness and response

The 2009 appeal for the Non-Food Item Common Pipeline – a system managed by ‎UNICEF, CARE International and the UN Joint Logistics Centre – is seeking US$16.47 ‎million to assist approximately 1.4 million conflict and disaster-affected people in the ‎northern states of Sudan.‎

Established in 2004, the Non-Food Item (NFI) Common Pipeline is the main provider of ‎non-food and emergency shelter items in the North of Sudan. Maximizing economies of ‎scale, the pipeline draws on supply chain efficiencies, reducing cost, avoiding duplication ‎of efforts, standardizing items distributed, and thus promoting effectiveness.‎

More than 90 per cent of all non-food items and emergency shelter distributions taking ‎place in Darfur, and approximately 95 per cent of distributions in the other northern states ‎utilized items from the Common Pipeline. In 2009, the Common Pipeline partners will ‎focus on provision of jerry cans, plastic sheeting, sleeping mats and blankets – all items ‎that families often lose during times of crisis, but essential to their survival in the first ‎hours and days of an emergency.‎

In 2008, the NFI Common Pipeline continued to be the primary mechanism for the ‎provision of non-food and emergency shelter items in Darfur and the other northern states ‎of Sudan.‎

The NFI Common Pipeline is also a shining example of effective partnership in action. ‎UNICEF procures the non-food items and delivers them to two main warehousing hubs ‎in the north of Sudan. CARE provides logistics services for the warehousing and delivery ‎of items to sub-warehouses and implementing partners. CARE is also responsible for the ‎monitoring and evaluation of NFI distributions. UNJLC manages the overall supply chain ‎by bringing together all stakeholders in order to maintain coherence and  harmonize ‎activities, while ensuring that gaps in coverage are identified.‎
