UNICEF is supporting Children Living with HIV Care Association with recreational activities including include art, music, drama, and computer lessons. HIV-affected families are provided with psychosocial support. Under a pilot initiative, 20 families affected with HIV/AIDS are being provided with livelihood training and assets to improve the socioeconomic status of those families and hence the wellbeing of the affected children.

The new “Word in A Bus” initiative brought awareness messages to passengers using public transport in the northern states. Over 800 drivers and stewards were trained to deliver messages to passengers through the playing of drama, spots, songs, documentaries, and the distribution of materials.

About 5 million young people out of school were reached through over 400 specially designed television and radio programmes in the north of Sudan. Twenty four young people were trained as local journalists to work with these radio stations to produce HIV/AIDS messages, and 54 community leaders were trained by the local radio stations to disseminate HIV/AIDS messages.

To prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), 13 antenatal care clinics in the north of Sudan are now ready to provide PMTCT services. Through this initiative, 49,000 pregnant women attending these ANC sites had access to routine counselling and testing. Over 30,000 pregnant women received routine counselling out of which 7,500 women accepted HIV testing and 54 HIV positive women started treatment.

Peer education and awareness raising activities reached over 1.4 million people, including 162,000 out-of-school young people, providing information and skills to reduce their vulnerability to HIV.
