Country Music Foundation
UNICEF has been part of a
25 year old partnership with the Country Music Foundation. This foundation is
not only dedicated to bringing country and western music to Sri Lanka, but
ensuring that the proceeds go to children.
The funds raised through the 2013 concert, will help in speeding up justice for
children. There are only two courts in the country dedicated to children’s
cases - the Children’s Court in Battaramulla and the other in Jaffna. There are
also over 4,000 children in the country awaiting justice, many of whom have to
wait an average of six years before their case comes to court. And then, there
are countless numbers of children who suffer abuse, neglect and exploitation
every day and who require our help.
The funds from this years concert will help convert three new high courts into
“children’s courts.” This means that vulnerable children such as those who are
survivors of abuse and exploitation, or children whose parents are separating,
or those that require special care, will now have increased access to justice.
More court officers, judges, magistrates and lawyers will understand how to
treat juvenile cases, and physical infrastructure will be in place to separate
and protect child survivors from their abusers.
