The '80s1980 *The National Committee formed in 1978 becomes the Children’s Secretariat, the first government body to focus specifically on formulating child-related policies. 1982 *Legislation is passed to increase maternity leave benefits from six weeks to three months for working women after the UNICEF-assisted study and symposium on the impact of leave on breastfeeding. 1984 *Measles vaccine is introduced to the national immunization programme with UNICEF assistance. 1989 *Sri Lanka achieves Universal Child Immunization status on 3rd December.
