Introduction
The government of Sri Lanka and UNICEF country programme is based on a life-cycle development model which looks at the different needs of children as they grow into adults. The programme starts from early childhood (under 5 years) and progresses through the learning years (5-14 years) to adolescence (14-18 years) as each age group has specific needs that need to be met. This is supported by the cross cutting Water and Sanitation and the Child Protection Programme which covers abuse, exploitation, child recruitment, mine risk education and psychological care and support. The full country programme is supported by Communication, Programme Coordination, and Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation sections. Response to the 2004 tsunami overshadowed and dominated UNICEF Sri Lanka’s work in 2005. A three year plan, “Recovering with Children” continues this work, while the office also returns concentration to covering regular programme activities.
