Griselda Guadalupe Garcia, 14, of El Salvador

Griselda Lupita Garcia from Santa Ana, El Salvador, knows a thing or two about hard work. She's been working since she was 10 years old to support her mother and four siblings.

"I go to school in the mornings and work in the market for about five hours every afternoon," the 14-year-old explains.

She is in New York this week representing the Salvadoran Association for Rural Health at the third Preparatory Committee meeting for the UN General Assembly's Special Session on Children. Her association promotes the rights of child workers.

Griselda believes that she was selected from among 150 young leaders attending last year's regional preparatory meeting in Jamaica "because I have no fear."

"I hope we can arrive at one proposition and that all governments will value the rights of children," she says.

In spite of a few initial language and translation difficulties, Griselda has been amazed by how much the young delegates from different regions have in common.

"My ideal world is a just and fair place for children, where our rights are respected and where we can participate in everything," she says.
