John Greensmith: International Executive Director of Plan International

John Greensmith is the International Executive Director of Plan International. He joined Plan in July 1997. Mr. Greensmith examines the ways that non-governmental organizations evolve in response to changing global influences, both political and economic.

Mr. Greensmith was previously Managing Director of BP Africa, a division of BP Amoco PLC. Mr. Greensmith's career at BP Amoco began in South Africa and included assignments in the United Kingdom and Australia in such areas as refining, supply, financial control and internet technology.

In BP Africa, Mr. Greensmith negotiated with the World Bank on energy sector matters. Through this experience, he gained an understanding of the challenges facing countries in sub-Saharan Africa and insight and experience into the governance process in the region.

He was born in South Africa in 1949.
