Summary: Doctors in Botswana see the highest rates of maternal HIV infection in the world. Up to 70 percent of expectant mothers are HIV positive. Very few know they are infected. To address that problem, the government of Botswana is rolling out national AIDS programs across the country to raise awareness and change attitudes. Last year a pilot program came out to prevent mother to child transmission, offering free testing counseling and medical care. Health counselors and women going to the clinics speak out about how stigmatization associated with HIV/AIDS remains the most powerful obstacle in saving lives. |
