In 2005, the Secretary-General of the United Nations reaffirmed that the only way to achieve the Millennium Development Goals was to break with business as usual and dramatically accelerate and scale up action until 2015.
"If the United Nations is to be a useful instrument for its Member States and for the world's peoples.it must be fully adapted to the needs and circumstances of the twenty-first century. It must be open not only to States but also to civil society, which at both the national and international levels plays an increasingly important role in world affairs. Its strength must be drawn from the breadth of its partnerships and from its ability to bring those partners into effective coalitions for change across the whole spectrum of issues on which action is required to advance the cause of larger freedom," Kofi A. Annan.
The UNITE FOR CHILDREN UNITE AGAINST AIDS Campaign will support partnerships to advance action for children, adolescents and young people affected by HIV/AIDS.
Meeting the challenge of AIDS demands strengthened partnerships among a multiplicity of actors, which include the Bernard Van Leer Foundation, Care, Save the Children and World Vision, among others.
For example, in 2004, UNICEF led an effort to establish a Global Partners Forum on orphans and vulnerable children, comprised of more than 50 multilateral, governmental, academic, faith-based, private sector and other civil society organizations.
These organizations are co-sponsors, with UNICEF, of A Framework for the Protection, Care and Support of Orphans and Vulnerable Children Living in a World with HIV and AIDS, which is an important tool for guiding and mobilizing a joint response to children and AIDS. The members of the Global Partners Forum share a common understanding of the situation of children and AIDS and a common commitment to global partnerships and actions.
UNICEF continues to develop and expand its partnerships with these and other non-governmental and faith-based organizations, parliamentarians and elected officials, youth and sporting organizations to support campaign activities in four areas:
