Over a four day period, from 27 February, to the first of March 2009, millions of children in Ivory Coast are being vaccinated against the Wild Poliovirus.
33,000 community volunteers are going door to door in a synchronized Poliovirus Eradication campaign taking place in 8 West African countries.
It was in December 2008, that the World Health Organization registered 800 cases of Poliovirus in Nigeria, with other cases occurring in Mali, Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Ghana. Ivory Coast saw its first case of Wild Polio in over 4 years in the district of Adiake, over100 kilometers from Abidjan.
