In June, 2003, Mr. Kastberg was appointed Regional Director for the Latin America and Caribbean regions. Mr. Kastberg began his international career in 1980 with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), serving first as Assistant Repatriation Officer (1980-1981) in Buylawayo, Zimbabwe, where he was responsible for monitoring and co-ordinating the safe return and reintegration of refugees from Botswana and Zambia; and later as Assistant Programme Officer in Juba, Sudan, where he planned, negotiated and implemented programmes for emergency assistance and protection of Ugandan refugees (1981-1983). From 1983 to 1986, Mr. Kastberg was Head of the Kampuchean Unit in Bangkok, Thailand and during the period of 1986-1987, he served as Fund-Raising Officer in Geneva, Switzerland. For the period of 1987-1988, Mr. Kastberg served as Regional Programme Officer in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Mr. Kastberg's professional work experience also included service with the Swedish International Development Authority, Stockholm, Sweden as Head of Section (1988-1990), and with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Stockholm, Sweden, also as head of Section (1990-1992). From 1992 to 1995, he was employed as a counsellor with the Permanent Mission of Sweden in Geneva, Switzerland. From January to December 1996, Mr. Kastberg worked with the Embassy of Sweden in Rome, Italy, as Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations organizations. From February 1997 until his appointments with UNICEF, Mr. Kastberg was involved in Humanitarian and Human Rights issues for the Office of the High Representative in the northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina on secondment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Government of Sweden to Banja Luka.
Mr. Kastberg is a national of Sweden. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Stockholm, Sweden, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics, with a major in Spanish.
