| An adolescent girlds enacts a marriage negotiation. |
Interventions for adolescents are less in Burkina Faso, and even fewer exist for married girls. Majority of adolescent girls are married - frequently to older men as 2nd /3rd wives.
Girls are not involved in marriage negotiations. Early marriage is prevalent (62% under the age of 18). There is continuing high morbidity and mortality rates associated with maternity and low use of services.
The majority of girls are circumcised.
The level of education is significantly lower among girls. Girls are restricted in movement. Life-time risk of dying in pregnancy 1:14. Girls 2-3 times more likely to be infected with HIV compared to boys. Information to young people is limited and gender insensitive.
Project objectives
- Develop a much fuller information base for planning and intervention purposes with respect to the most pressing priorities of adolescent girls in Burkina Faso.
- To learn more about married and unmarried adolescent girls' needs in two regions.
