Phuthego is a soft-spoken, 51-year-old, single mother of four. She is the eldest of five sisters, or was at any rate, since all have now passed away, leaving behind a total of 14 children dependant on her for maternal care and guidance.

In 1995, Dineo "summoned the courage" as she put it, to approach a government centre for an HIV test. Her worst fears were confirmed when two weeks later she went for her results and learnt that she was HIV-positive. In 2000, Dineo gave birth to a girl and hopes that her participation in the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) therapy will mean that her child will escape this terrible disease.
