Donor update - 18 February 2005
More than five years after the resumption of hostilities, the situation in Chechnya and the neighbouring republics is still characterized by complexity and unpredictability. More than 34,000 civilian displaced people from returning home from the republic of Ingushetia. Other neighbouring republics are threathened by the spread of violence. UNICEF in the Northern Caucasus focuses on providing access to education to children who for various reasons are deprived of this right. Peace education and psycho-social rehabilitation are essential parts of these efforts. UNICEFalso needs funds for child protection (including mine action), health, water and sanitation. But three months after the CAP was launched, UNICEF has only received 17.1% of the required funding for Northern Caucasus (US$6.5 million) in 2005.
