Malnutrition levels remain high despite improvement of the nutritional status of children. Nutrition therefore remains a high priority for UNICEF. The prevalence of diarrhoea as a result of contaminated, unsanitary latrines and unhygienic practices is nevertheless as bad as in 2002. This situation is further aggravated by ceasing the practice of treating piped water, due to lack of funding. Furthermore, high maternal mortality rates and lack of vaccines and medicines are preoccupying. UNICEF received in 2005 only 9% of the required contribution (US$ 1,579,000 versus US$ 16,905,000 needed for 2005). [PDF]
