Change for Good® is an innovative partnership between UNICEF and the international airline industry.

Established in 1987, the program is one of UNICEF's best-known and longest-running partnerships. The alliance is designed to collect unused currency from passengers and convert spare coins and notes into life-saving materials and services for the world's neediest children.

Currently, 10 major airline carriers are conducting Change for Good® collections on their international and sometimes domestic flights:  Aer Lingus, Alitalia, All Nippon Airways (ANA), American Airlines, Asiana Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, JAL and QANTAS.  In-flight videos on these carriers inform passengers of the programme and invite them to contribute their spare currency.  Airline personnel collect the spare coins and paper currency from passengers. Funds collected are then donated to the respective National Committee for UNICEF which regularly transfers the funds to UNICEF's programmes helping children in over 150 countries around the world.

Since 1987, the Change for Good® programme has generated over US$70 million .  On behalf of UNICEF and the world's children: THANK YOU, Change for Good® participants!

In December 1999, the oneworld Alliance and UNICEF announced a major fundraising initiative - The oneworld Alliance for UNICEF. The oneworld Alliance nominated UNICEF as its global charity and most of its members -- Aer Lingus, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Qantas -- have committed to support UNICEF through Change for Good ® and other fundraising efforts.

Change for Good® provides UNICEF and the international airline industry with a unique partnership opportunity: It enables UNICEF to deliver its message to a captive global audience while showcasting the airlines' commitment to social responsibility, thereby increasing customer loyalty.   Airlines benefit from their association with UNICEF, the world's leading children's organization.  In addition,   Change for Good® gives airline staff an opportunity to give back while travelling internationally.  A survey conducted by one of the participating carriers showed that travelers are happy to generously donate their foreign change.

The Change for Good® program:

# raises millions of dollars annually for children around the world
# enables UNICEF to communicate its message on behalf of children to a captive global audience
# showcases the airline partners' commitment to social responsibility, thereby increasing customer loyalty
# provides airline personnel an easy way to help children while performing everyday work duties
provides passengers an easy and effective way to give back while traveling internationally.

Quote from British Airways General Counsel, British Airways, Rob Webb
"British Airways has worked with UNICEF for over twelve years on the Change for Good programme and during this time we have raised in excess of £23 million for UNICEF's vital work for children. It is an excellent example of how a company and a charity can work together to make a tangible difference to children's lives. The Change for Good programme has engaged our key stakeholders, customers and employees. The success of the programme rests on the strong partnership between both organisations. The result has been one of the longest running and highest income charity partnerships in the UK today of which both British Airways and UNICEF are very proud".

American Airlines Field Visit to Peru

American Airlines
In December 2006, American Airlines, a Change for Good® participant since 1994, reinvigorated their support for the program by launching a new volunteer initiative "Champions for Children" with the help of Airline Ambassadors International and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants. The program is designed to empower flight attendants and others to take action and improve children's lives as they perform everyday work duties.  As the face of Change for Good®, Champions proudly share their humanitarian efforts and interest with passengers every day. The program kicked off with a field visit to Peru where a group of dedicated flight attendants visited community centers, health clinics and schools supported by UNICEF.  The journey helped demonstrate the impact flight crew have by participating in the Change for Good® program. One American Airlines participant remarked, "This trip was very impressionable for me, knowing that the funds collected by Champions for Children on board our AA flights do make a difference!"  Footage captured during this field visit was later made into the in-flight video shown to passengers on American's international flights.

To date, more than 900 American Airlines staff have already signed up to be Champions for Children. This number continues to rise as more volunteers become committed advocates for the world's children and share their passion with other colleagues.

Aer Lingus
In 2006, over US $1.2 million was raised by Change for Good® on board Aer Lingus long-haul flights. This is the highest amount ever raised in one year (this also includes the newly launched Dubai route).

After the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2005, Aer Lingus conducted a special one-week Change for Good® collection onboard all Aer Lingus flights. A total of €135,000 was collected for UNICEF's Emergency Tsunami Appeal.

Quote from Aer Lingus Chief Executive Dermot Mannion at the press conference marking the tenth anniversary of Change for Good® in Jan 2007

"Aer Lingus is proud of its partnership with UNICEF Ireland and the success of the Change for Good campaign over the last ten years. Its success would not be possible but for the ongoing generosity of our passengers and the commitment and dedication of Aer Lingus staff. We look forward to continuing to support the UNICEF Change for Good campaign which offers invaluable assistance to the world's most disadvantaged children, making a real difference to their lives."

Qantas
Qantas is proud to have worked in partnership with UNICEF Australia on the UNICEF Change for Good® program since 1991. On any one of 3,500 flights every week Qantas staff on the ground and in the air perform an extra task by collecting the 'UNICEF Change for Good' envelopes that are in every headset pack. To date, UNICEF Change for Good® has raised more than AUD$16 million on Qantas flights, helping to transform the lives of millions of children around the world.

The program involves Qantas staff from all levels of the organisation including flight attendants, ground crew and the management team. Qantas Chairman Margaret Jackson also plays a role in the program as Patron of UNICEF Change for Good® in Australia.

Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Philip Chen: "The Change for Good concept of collecting spare change from passengers is very simple and at the same time extremely effective in raising vital funds for UNICEF. We are very pleased to have collected almost HK$10 million in 2005/2006 and we are confident the money will be put to good use in helping to improve the lives of disadvantaged children."

On a recent Change for Good field trip to the Philippines, Cathay Pacific staff visited various UNICEF supported projects in the Oriental Negros province ranging from education projects in remote, impoverished regions to support groups for victims of child abuse.

Terri Li, a Cathay Pacific cabin crew member who participated in the field trip said, "Now, whenever I see a UNICEF donation envelope, I will recall the scenes from the Philippines and remind myself that more needs to be done to make this world a better place for all."

Finnair
Finnair and the 2007 Change for Good® holiday campaign collected funds for Vietnamese children affected by HIV/AIDS.   Finnair aims to make a difference in the areas where the airline operates.  Instead of sending holiday cards and gifts, Finnair contributed equivalent sums to the Change for Good® prgramme collected during its leisure flights in the winter to Vietnam.  Vietnamese children affected by HIV/AIDS will be Finnair's Change for Good® fundraising theme for the next three years.

Quote from Cia Branders, Finnair Representative, 2006
"The Change for Good campaign is being organised for the 11th time this year. Although we create the means for the collection, we rely on the support of our customers in practice. Finnair wants to thank its customers for their long-term support in improving the lot of the children of the world."

Between 2001-2005 Finnair's aim was to support UNICEF education projects for young girls in Nepal.  In 1998 the target was the drug-related problems of the youth of Kaliningrad, while children in Kosovo benefited in 1999 and support was given to the children of Ethiopia in 2000.  In 1994 and 1996 funds raised supported UNICEF programmes for the children of war-torn Ruanda.
