Many standard interventions can have a large impact on reducing maternal mortality. Family planning counselling, adequate nutrition during pregnancy, antenatal services, skilled birth attendants, emergency obstetrics and post-partum care provide a minimum foundation for healthy and safe pregnancies. If applied regularly, these interventions could prevent up to 80 per cent of all maternal deaths.
