Himal grew up in Udayapur, at the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains. For years, he worked as a porter alongside his father through the mountains' ragged footpaths and precipitous drops. Yet it was only last summer, as he sat on an airplane for the first time, that he was able to admire the impressive peaks of the mountain range whose name he bears. No small accomplishment for a 16-year-old boy who had only been to school for a few days.
