Definitions of the indicators Main data sources
Government funding of vaccines - Percentage of vaccines routinely administered in a country to protect children that are financed by the national government (including loans). Use of improved drinking water sources and adequate sanitation facilities - UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) and Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS).
EPI - Expanded Programme on Immunization: The immunizations in this programme include those against TB, DPT, polio and measles, as well as protecting babies against neonatal tetanus by vaccination of pregnant women. Other vaccines (e.g. against hepatitis B or yellow fever) may be included in the programme in some countries. Government funding of vaccines - UNICEF and WHO.
Immunization - UNICEF, WHO, MICS and DHS.
DPT - Diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus. Oral rehydration - UNICEF, MICS and DHS.
Adult HIV prevalence - The estimated number of adults living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 1999 was divided by the 1999 adult population (aged 15-49). Adult HIV prevalence - Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
Oral rehydration rate - Percentage of children under five with diarrhoea in the last two weeks who received increased fluids and continued feeding during the episode.

Notes - Data not available.
h Not enough data were available to produce an estimate of HIV prevalence for end 1999. Instead, for each of the estimates, the 1994 prevalence estimate published by WHO/Global Programme on AIDS was applied to the country’s 1999 adult population to produce the estimate.
x Indicates data that refer to years or periods other than those specified in the column heading, differ from the standard definition or refer to only part of a country.
* Data refer to the most recent year available during the period specified in the column heading.
