Young Palestinian leaders
During the horrors of conflict, Palestinian adolescents and young
adults take refuge in the office of the Palestinian Youth Association
for Leadership and Rights Activation (PYALARA). Here they learn
to channel their frustrations, fears and anger through communication.
PYALARA empowers young people with leadership building, media
skills and counselling. They are trained as peer counsellors,
helping youths scarred by violence to cope with their fears and
nurture their hopes. They learn to design and produce television
episodes for children.
PYALARA also supports student journalists who publish The
Youth Times, the first and only youth paper in the region.
Begun in 1998, the 16-page monthly newspaper, with a circulation
of 7,000, is written in English and Arabic. The students, with
training and guidance from staff and volunteers, craft the periodical
from story ideas through final production. With a newly
designed website, the paper is now available throughout the
world.
