UNICEF Executive Director accepts Webby award

At last night’s ceremony in New York, UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman accepts the Webby award for the online report, ‘The State of the World’s Children 2006’.

NEW YORK, USA, 13 June 2006 – UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman attended the 10th Annual Webby Awards ceremony in New York last night to accept the organization’s first-ever Webby for the online multimedia report, The State of the World's Children 2006.

Observing the award ceremony’s five-word limit on acceptance speeches, Ms. Veneman delivered the following message: “Make UNICEF obsolete – help kids.”

Called "the online equivalent of the Oscars" by the New York Times, the Webby Awards are the leading international honour for websites, judged on criteria of content, structure, visual design, interactivity and overall visitor experience. The awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, which received a record 5,500 entries from sites in more than 40 countries this year.

The 2006 Webby Awards recognized a diverse group of winners, including Google Maps, the World Bank, BBC news and National Public Radio.

UNICEF won the People’s Choice Webby Award in the charitable organizations/non-profit category for ‘The State of the World’s Children 2006’. The award-winning presentation brings to life UNICEF’s flagship global report with interactive features, photos and videos in which children tell their own stories.
