Junior 8 Summit 2006
July 2006 - Children from Southern African joined peers from the G8 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) in St Petersburg, Russia through satellite link up and a video conference to discuss issues relating to energy and sustainable development in southern Africa and Africa. The debate was screened live (by satellite) to Johannesburg, where it was observed by representatives from the President’s Office (Office for the Rights of the Child), UNICEF and young and adult representatives from the neighbouring countries. Eight southern African children, aged 14 – 17, representing Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique and South Africa shared critical concerns related to energy, sustainable development, HIV & AIDS, debt relief, fair trade and the role and representation of children and young people from Africa at the G8 and made some hard hitting recommendations to be taken up with the G8 leaders and leaders such as President Thabo Mbeki who was attending the G8.
