In 2005 64 health facilities have been assessed for “Baby-friendly Hospital” status. The assessment resulted in 38 new facilities being declared "Baby-friendly", bringing the total to 176 Baby-friendly health facilities in South Africa.
The country is now keen to develop and implement a strategy of “Baby-friendly Communities” that will entail growth monitoring and promotion and increased advocacy for exclusive infant feeding.
UNCEF has provided technical assistance in the development of a draft South African Code of Marketing Breast-milk Substitutes.

Tygerberg Hospital - A tertiary facility providing services for two-thirds of the Western Cape Province. It was recently accredited as a Baby Friendly Hospital, being only the second tertiary facility to have attained this status. The facility is renowned for comprehensive maternal health services, including PMTCT with high uptake, Kangaroo Mother Care and its excellent experience with premature and low birth weight babies. UNICEF accredited the facility as Baby Friendly through training of assessment teams. UNICEF will also shortly engage and support further operational research on the impact of BFHI and its effects on the lives of children.
