Penguins and reindeers rally to help children

What do friendly reindeers, cute penguins, chubby Santas and cuddly teddies have in common? They’re all adorable soft toys on sale at Mr Price Home stores now – to help raise funds for UNICEF and the Red Cap Foundation.

Mr Price and UNICEF believe that every little girl and boy deserves the best start in life; and jointly support initiatives to bring early childhood development programmes within the reach of all young children.

Count your blessings this Christmas – and help little ones learn to count – simply by snapping up a specially-marked soft toy from Mr Price Home.

Why it matters

That the Imizamo’yethu Day Care Centre is in an impoverished part of the Eastern Cape does not matter. What matters is that the youngsters who attend are thriving – thanks to its quality early childhood development programme.

“We teach children about love and care; about right and wrong. We prepare them for when they go to school, so they know how to be independent, how to hold a pencil, how to count,” says centre director, Ruth Faku.

Ruth knows that Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes – which incorporate the holistic growth of a child socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively, from birth to nine years – are critical stepping stones to a bright future.

If deprived of proper stimulation and care as toddlers, children are more likely to perform poorly at school and be at an educational, social and economic disadvantage later in life.
