ING CEO learns about UNICEF's Sport for Development programme in Khayelitsha
26 June 2010, Cape Town - Mr. Hans Van de Noordaa of Dutch banking group ING – who are the main sponsor of the National Football League and a partner of UNICEF Netherlands – was the guest of UNICEF and SCORE at a holiday sports tournament in Khayelitsha. SCORE is one of UNICEF’s four sport for development implementing partners and this final tournament was based on the peer education, leadership and sport skills learned through UNICEF’s Sport for Development programme. It was a culmination of two weeks of matches played by 32 teams that shadowed the official match schedule of the FIFA World Cup™. The SCORE Cup final brought together teams of learners and community leaders from Hanover Park and Khayelitsha, two very different communities in Cape Town. The aim was to promote exchange, share skills and ideas and forge friendships through football. The visitors too joined in the fun, playing traditional games after watching the football. “I received a unique chance to visit this project and I was very impressed with everyone’s passion and enthusiasm,” said Mr. Van de Noordaa. “It is really important that children receive information on key issues, like the importance of school and responsibility, in a child-friendly environment." Mr. Van de Noordaa from ING cheers with a group of children from Khayelitsha and Hanover Park who took part in a football tournament.
