In this paper, Sir Richard Jolly discusses UNICEF's long history of engagement with economic policy. He affirms that from as early as 1947, UNICEF recognized the importance of economic policy for children and since then has sought the help of development economists in mapping out what this might involve. Several Nobel Prize winners in economics have contributed ideas and advice to UNICEF over the years. He recounts UNICEF's transition from humanitarian welfare agency to development agency for children, given that children would never receive the priorities they deserved unless their needs were fully integrated into national economic planning.
