2006

Belgrade, 20 November 2006 – UNICEF today awarded Ms. Danijela Ivankovic for the TV story “Something Like a Story” broadcast on RTV Majdanpek and Mr. Momir Turudic for his text „A Long Way to Adulthood” published in the Vreme weekly.

„Something like a story” is a very dark, difficult story about domestic violence - a step mother who maltreats her husband’s son. She is depriving the child of food, beats him, brutally hurts him, forces him to hard labour and stealing. The father’s blindness to all this and hypocritical passivity of the community who see what is happening and yet are not doing anything to prevent, stop this violence. The author, skilfully using the possibilities of her media, leads the story from a seemingly fairy-tale beginning by making a parallel to Cinderella, to posing the right questions and following the boy’s story, to the happy ending. And all this respecting ethical and professional standards.

„ A Long Way to Adulthood” is an analytical, and at the same time sharp and poignant article which enlightens the problems of poverty, discrimination and exclusion of Roma children. The article talks about their lives encompassed by non-understanding, prejudices, sometimes even hatred that cannot be explained and understood.  It also talks about the lost opportunities and lack of efforts by the community to integrate Roma children into the society and everyday life. By giving a number of evidence to illustrate the hardships the Roma people face, the author systematically builds the picture of their lives, thus calling for action in the society to make changes.
