Since its foundation in Sweden in 1943, IKEA has opened 253 stores in 35 countries around the world and became the world’s leader on production and retail sales of home furnishing and home accessories.

Over the course of UNICEF’s ten-year long partnership for children IKEA’s support to UNICEF has exceeded US$25mln, including a multi-million dollar investment in support of child protection and immunization programmes in the Uttar Pradesh region of India, US$ 2.8 mln in support of Right to Play programmes in Angola and Uganda, and more than US$ 4 mln in cash and in-kind donations to UNICEF programmes in tsunami-affected countries and the region affected by earthquakes.

Campaign “A child’s smile is priceless”
Since 2005 UNICEF and IKEA have been implementing joint projects in Russia. Over the course of our alliance, IKEA’s contribution of over US$ 500,000, including about US$ 150,000 from sales of the “IKEA Brume Bear” soft toy, have been invested in UNICEF’s programme on social and psychological assistance for orphans and disabled children. Over 2000 children aged from 3 to 17 years old living in Moscow and the Moscow and Vladimir regions have received support.

US$ 170,000 has been invested in the project to reduce social isolation of disabled children and help build an environment where they may more easily enjoy a full social and intellectual life both in their families and in mainstream schools.

A Campaign to celebrate International Child Protection Day
From 1 to 6 June 2006, IKEA stores implemented an advocacy campaign to support "International Children’s Day". IKEA and UNICEF prepared a game for children to find 5 child-rights related slogans located inside the trading area.  At the exit children were provided with balloons, pins and pens with free Polaroid photos for children, taken in the stores under the slogan "When I grow up, I want to be a ...” with UNICEF and IKEA logos in the background. Press-releases, internet and mass-media coverage were also on the agenda.
