A camera gives equal opportunities both to disabled and healthy children

Disabled children are usually isolated from regular children. They don’t know that they can be friends and see the world around them in an identical way regardless of their physical disabilities. In late May, the NGO “Perspectiva” gave children such an opportunity. The project “Photo workshop: Through the eyes of children” was implemented in three schools in Moscow -  No.142, 518 и 1961. American photographer Pamela Mendelson participated in the project as a trainer. She came to Moscow to work with children for the second time.

26 children attended the photo workshop. They were split into pairs consisting of a disabled child and a healthy one. Children with all sort of impairments were involved in the workshop activities: hearing and visual impairments, cerebral palsy, autism and other disabilities. The children took pictures of each other, their schools and friends. Later, they exchanged their impressions and shared their feelings. It was an extremely important lesson for the children: they managed to see the world through the eyes of their peers and understand their feelings.
“It is such moments that bring children together, and it is not important whether a person is disabled or not,” Maria Perfiliyeva, “Perspectiva” educational project manager, said. “The ultimate goal of our project is to bring together disabled and healthy children and give them a chance to see the world in a new manner, free of any stereotypes .

The first photo workshop was held last November, followed by the exhibition “Through the eyes of children”. This year, 20 photographers from Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir, Samara and Ukhta were asked to join the workshop activities. They came to Moscow to learn more about the project and gain new experiences that would enable them to arrange similar photo workshops at their local schools.

The photo workshop project is implemented jointly with UNICEF.
