Anatoly Karpov
Anatoly Karpov, the world-famous chess player and ex-World Chess Champion, provides active help and support to assistance programmes for children both in Russia and other CEE/CIS countries. Being a chess player, Anatoly Karpov knows only too well how important the development of intellectual potential can be for every child. Iodine deficiency is a serious problem that can lead to children’s mental and physical retardation, and Anatoly Karpov is an active advocate of the legislative initiative on universal salt iodisation. Up to 60% of the population in Russia are at risk of diminished intellectual and capacities due to low-iodine food. Anatoly Karpov also participated in the Junior 8 Summit meeting organized by the RF Government with the active support of UNICEF in 2006. He played simultaneous chess games against eight Junior 8 teams, which turned out to be an unforgettable event for the young delegates.
