Zarina and Georgiy after the Awards Ceremony at the Stranger Festival

21 July 2008, NALCHIK. 11 year old Zarina Pashtova from Kabardino-Balkaria, an alumna of UNICEF peace and tolerance camp of 2007, came back from Stranger Festival in Amsterdam with Inside Out award. Zarina’s video, as well as a video by Georgiy Ambalov from North Ossetia, was among 14 one minute videos made during oneminutesjr. workshops sponsored by UNICEF and nominated for various awards at the festival.

StrangerFestival is Europe’s biggest event for young video makers and fans sharing their work and exchanging ideas organized annually by the European Cultural Foundation. The jam-packed programme included more than 20 free workshops, video screenings, expert meetings, and a video exhibition. This year the festival took place at Westergasfabriek from 3 to 5 July.

In Zarina’s video we see the author herself blowing a balloon against the background of various activities she does together with other kids. “The meaning of my video, - says Zarina - is that a human being, his inner world, is extremely vulnerable, and you can not leave people by themselves, because then they would get lost in their own solitude and forget about us. We have to value every human being” (Watch video)

Zarina’s video was filmed during one of the oneminutesjr. workshops that took place at peace and tolerance camps in North Ossetia and Ingushetia in July 2007. While the peace and tolerance training session gave the children the background information about conflict prevention and conflict management, the video work presented them with an opportunity to put their ideas into practice. Many of the films produced by the young people in the summer camps show different ways of dealing with problems and tensions among children.

At the same camp Georgiy Ambalov, a 14 year old from Vladikavkaz, filmed his video “Balance”, which was nominated for a Stranger Award at the festival in Amsterdam. Georgiy talks about his video: “We stand on two ends of a seesaw, myself and another kid and we are trying to find the right balance. This is a metaphor for our life.” (Watch video).

Right after the festival both Zarina and Georgiy visited peace and tolerance camp that was taking place on the Caspian seashore near the town of Izberbash (Dagestan), where they presented their videos and shared impressions of the festival with this year's camp participants.
