7 May 2008: The Government of the Chechen Republic praises UNICEF for its programme of psychosocial assistance to children
NALCHIK, RUSSIA. Today, the fifth meeting of the Steering Committee for Psychosocial Assistance to children in the Chechen Republic was held in Nalchik. Meeting’s agenda included evaluation of the interim progress in efforts to improve psychosocial state of children, discussion of the whole range of issues related to the UNICEF psychosocial programme implementation supported by ECHO and USAID, and ways to promote further cooperation between UNICEF and the Chechen Government. The main topic of discussion at the meeting was a comprehensive Psychosocial Republican Programme 2008-2012 developed by UNICEF at request of the Government of the Chechen Republic. Government representatives confirmed that the programme will be presented for consideration and approval to the President of the Chechen Republic. Lema Magomadov, Deputy Chairperson of the Chechen Government and the Chairperson of the Steering Committee noted that “the Chechen Government highly appreciates the UNICEF efforts to provide psychosocial assistance to children in the Chechen Republic. We, in return, are ready to support UNICEF initiatives. I believe the implementation of the Psychosocial Republican Programme will be the next step towards the improvement of the psychosocial situation of children in the Chechen Republic”.
