February 19: Long-term strategy “Moscow children” discussed by the Moscow City Government
Today Moscow City Government discussed the implementation strategy for policies devoted to children - “Moscow children” for 2008-2017. UNICEF Russia experts played an important role in development of the strategy, which is based on the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and UNICEF Child Friendly Cities initiative. The strategy was presented by the head of the Youth Policy Department of the Moscow City Government Ludmila Guseva. Moscow City Children’s Rights Ombudsman Aleksei Golovan, UNICEF Representative in the Russian Federation and Belarus Carel de Rooy, NGOs’ representatives and experts took part in discussing the strategy. Moscow high school student Misha Grachev and representatives of the student “shadow government” talked about the results of the strategy’s discussion at their schools. Carel de Rooy emphasized that the strategy envisions a system of indicators for each prioritised field of work that allows to not only track implementation process, but also asses its efficiency. “Only in August 2007 Moscow City Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UNICEF and we already see the first result – this great document, long-term strategy of turning Moscow into a child-friendly city” – noted Carel de Rooy. _______________________________ About UNICEF: UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence.
