During the UNICEF charity concert, Moscow, Kolomenskoe, June 2007.

The joint UNICEF-Pampers “One Pack – One Vaccine” programme is continuing in Russia. Anyone can take part in this charity action. To do this, from October 1 through December 31, 2008, you need to buy at least one specially marked pack of Pampers diapers or wipes with a special sticker. For every purchase of a specially marked Pampers product bearing the UNICEF logo, Pampers will donate the cost of one vaccine to UNICEF to help fight tetanus. Enough funds to cover the cost of 4, 054 000 vaccines have been raised in Russia during the 85days of the programme.

Regardless of the achievements of contemporary medicine, women and their newborn infants are still dying of tetanus today. Every year, tetanus claims the lives of 30,000 women and 140,000 children, while only two doses of the tetanus vaccines are recommended for pregnant women providing protection for moms and their babies.

Six years ago, UNICEF launched a global campaign to eliminate tetanus. Pampers assumed the role of UNICEF’s implementing partner in its efforts to prevent tetatus infection in newborns and their mothers.  The joint UNICEF/Pampers initiative was initially launched in 2006 in the United Kingdom and was soon supported by many other countries. During that period, Pampers raised enough funds to cover the cost of 50 million lifesaving vaccines, and it is expected to raise additional funds towards another 200 million vaccines within the next three years. The vaccines procured through the funds raised have already saved and will continue saving the lives of mothers and children in 17 African states.

It was in this capacity that UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Oxana Fedorova visited the Democratic Republic of Congo in September 2008, where she could see with her own eyes the actual implementation of UNICEF and Pampers joint efforts. In particular, she visited several medical facilities in the country’s capital Kinshasa.
