September 3, 2007: Photo exhibition "Moscow through the eyes of children"
The photo exhibition ‘Moscow through the eyes of children opened today at the International Conference ‘Cities for children’ at the Moscow City Hall. The exhibition presents photos done by disabled and non-disabled children at the photo workshop in Moscow. The project was organized by UNICEF and its Russian partner Perspectiva with support from IKEA. UNICEF and its Russian partner, Disability Rights NGO Perspektiva, are working to bring inclusive education for children with disabilities to the top of the social agenda in Russia today. Inclusive education means that all children and young people – with or without disabilities – have the chance to learn together in their neighbourhood school with appropriate support for those students who may need it. UNICEF and Perspektiva organised a photography workshop in Moscow for 20 disabled and non-disabled children from 4 inclusive Moscow schools. The disabled children worked in teams with their non-disabled peers and classmates. They spent two days studying the basics of photography with Giacomo Pirozzi, a photographer famous for his work with children, and then set off around Moscow to a school, an orphanage, and the regular tourist sites. The photos in this exhibition are the result. They offer an entree into the experiences of disabled and non-disabled children working together to create a vision of the world around them. The images are richly textured and thought provoking and leave an impression of what is possible when bridges are built between children who are far too often separated.
