October 27, 2006: Youth friendly services to be established in Karelia

A project to develop a network of youth-friendly medical and social services (youth-friendly clinics) is being launched in Karelia for 2006-2008, as part of UNICEF’s integrated Health project in the republic.

On October 23-24, 2006, an orientation working meeting was held in Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia, for health care and social welfare officials, Heads of medical institutions, and agencies providing social and psychological care and assistance to adolescents. The facilitators of the meeting were experts from St-Petersburg youth-friendly clinics training and methodological center.

The principal goals of the orientation meeting were to provide basic information on a wide range of issues related to the youth-friendly approach in providing adolescents and young people with medical and social support services.  The participants discussed a strategy for developing similar services in the city of Petrozavodsk and the Republic of Karelia, and made preliminarily identification of territories, agencies and institutions willing to participate in the project.
