October 12, 2006: I care for every child. What about you?

Children With HIV Are Hampered by Society’s Attitude, Not the Disease

WHAT: Talk show
DATE: 20 October, Friday, 13.00
WHERE: Central House of Journalists, Marble Hall. Address: 8 Nikitsky blvd. (Metro stations Arbatskaya, Biblioteka imeni Lenina)
“Feminization” of the HIV/AIDS epidemic has led to a sharp increase in the number of children born from HIV-positive mothers. Today there are about 30,000 of them in Russia. They could all enjoy a long and fulfilling life if they receive the appropriate treatment. The only thing that blocks their development is our attitude. For children with HIV and babies with confirmed negative status born from HIV positive mothers, it is very difficult to be accepted at kinder gardens and schools. They are feared, humiliated, and ostracized. Why does this happen? What would you do if you found out that your child goes to the same school as a child with HIV?
FOCUS MEDIA Foundation, UNICEF and UNAIDS invite you to discuss these and other issues at a TV Talk Show.  The participants will include:
- Olga Sharapova, Director of the Department of Medical and Social Problems of Family, Motherhood, and Childhood of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation;
- Oleg Gazmanov, musician, composer, UNICEF Free Will Ambassador,
- Carel de Rooy, UNICEF Representative in the Russian Federation and Belarus,
- Andrei Gerish, Head of the Youth Policy Department of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation,
- Khedi Aydamirova, Head of AIDS Centre, Grozniy, Chechnya,
- Yevgeniy Voronin, Head of Infectious Diseases Hospital, Ust-Izhora, Leningrad Oblast,
- Aleksey Lysenkov, TV host of the program “AIDS-Ambulance” on TNT TV channel,
- Oksana Barkalova, FOCUS MEDIA Foundation.
