On May 18-22, 2009, a one-week Summer School course on adolescent health, arranged by a Russian-based unit of EuTEACH (European Training in Effective Adolescent Care and Health) Adolescent Health Scool, was conducted in St.Petersburg with UNICEF assistance. The Second Summer School focused on clinical aspects of socio-medical assistance to adolescents. The Summer School was established on the basis of the St.Petersburg Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education that has been successfully cooperating with the EuTEACH centre for many years.

It is the second time that UNICEF has provided its support to such an event. This form of training is unique not only for Russia, but for all Russian-speaking countries. For the first time ever, the Summer School has succeeded in bringing together leading experts on adolescent health, sharing international best practices, covering not only clinical aspects, but issues related to measures for adolescent preventive health care and relevant procedural and institutional provisions. The training sessions were facilitated by representatives of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation and experts from the Department of Adolescent Medicine and Valeology and the Child Psychiatry Department of the St.Petersburg Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education, as well as external lecturers from Armenia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Representatives from clinical services and youth organizations, as well as health officials from Ukraine, Belarus, Turkmenistan, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia participated in the training course.

EuTEACH Centre (European Training in Effective Adolescent Care and Health)

In 1999, the Multidisciplinary Unit for Adolescent Health from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, initiated a working group with selected leaders from other European countries working in the field of adolescent health. The principal objective of the EuTEACH initiative is the development of a training curriculum, methodological plans and resources targeted at health care professionals involved in the care of adolescents. The ultimate goal of the EuTEACH initiative is to improve health and social well-being of adolescents in Europe by upgrading the skills of health care providers.  As a result of cooperation between EuTEACH and the  St.Petersburg Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Educatio, a EuTEACH  Russian-based unit was established on the basis of the Department of Adolescent Medicine and Valeology.

More information about the EuTEACh initiative for Russian-language professionals can be found here.
