26 May: Determined the final composition of the Russian national J8 team

Upon the results of the final training session arranged by experts from the St.Petersburg University for winners of the Russian contest "The world through the eyes of youth" the final composition of the Russian national J8 team was determined. They are:

ISAYEVA Angelica Mikhailovna, 17 years old, the City of Sochi
Municipal Gymnasium # 8, 11th grade

Angelica is a winner of regional school olympiads in the English language, literature and history; she is a participant and a prizewinner of territorial Olympiads in the English language and literature. Angelica is a member of the School Council and dreams of getting a job as a staff member of the RF Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She is keen on foreign languages (English and French), literature and history. She takes interest in light athletics, cooking and sewing.

«Our future is not guaranteed. All of us - Planet Earth residents, including Russian citizens - are currently engaged in its building. Different people and different forces see their future in different ways. But there is one principal thing in common – the future should secure the right to free development for all peoples and Earth residents. That is why the most pressing political problem today is the development of equal and mutually beneficial international cooperation in the context of a new evolving multipolar world as well as a joint standoff in the face of such threats as international terrorism, nuclear proliferation, global climate change, infectious diseases and transnational organized crime».

KOZHINA Ksenia Yurievna, 17 years old, The City of Volzhsky, Volgograd region
Municipal Secondary School No.1, 11th  grade

Ksenia is a participant of the 2009 Regional English Language Olympiad and the 2008 Civic Education Program in Washington. She is a winner of the “FLEX” student exchange program and holds a school-leaving certificate awarded by a secondary school in the town of Joshua, USA. She takes interest in music, history, foreign languages and volleyball and is keen on enrolling in higher education majoring in international relations.

«I see tolerance as an open, friendly attitude of a community or a state toward a human being regardless of his/her ides, behavior or opinion. Tolerance implies the ability “to see through” a person, which is, undoubtedly, a difficult, but extremely important skill to master for all of us. Tolerance requires regular and deliberate training. Last year, I was an exchange student in Joshua, a small town in Texas, USA. The success of my learning experiences very much depended on my ability to see and perceive people the way they are, in other words, on my readiness towards tolerant perception of the outside world. Based on the experience that I gained when being an exchange student, I realized that volunteer activities opened up a new world for a person.  Volunteer work is a new phenomenon in Russia. But it is an obvious indication of the society which is reaching maturity. If each of us tries hard to be tolerant and respectful toward other people, the world around us will become much friendlier.”

KHULAYEVA Yulia Eduardovna, 17 years old, the village of Troitskoye, Republic of Kalmykia
Elista Lyceum, 10th grade

Yulia is a winner of the All-Russian Law Olympiad for school children and the European Union Olympiad in Legal Awareness. She is President of the Lyceum’s Debating Society. In 2007-2008, she studied in the USA under the FLEX programme. Yulia also excels in music (playing the piano and guitar), choreography, folk dancing, water polo and drama performance.

«Civic position is not a static pose, it implies action and an active attitude toward life. My participation in the Lyceum’s charity action aimed to provide support to the Elista Home for Senior Citizens had a lasting and profound impression on me. Never before have I been so acutely aware of someone close by needing badly my assistance. It is important to understand that everyone can make the world around us a better place to live.”

CHUKOV Roman Sergeevich, 16 years old, The City of Stavropol
Municipal Gymnasium # 25, 11th grade

Roman is a prizewinner of the second (municipal) round of the All-Russian School Olympiad in the English and German Languages, a prizewinner of the third (regional) round of the All-Russian English Language School Olympiad. He is the Chair of the children’s jury at the municipal round of the “Teacher of the Year – 2009” contest. He dreams of becoming a diplomat and representing Russia in international organizations. He is keen on foreign languages and has an excellent command of the English and German languages; he likes history and social sciences, keeps track of the latest political developments in Russia and worldwide, shows interest in the geopolitics of Russia within the system of international relations, goes in for basketball and boxing.

"Tolerance does not simply imply recognition of the existence of a person different from you. Tolerance implies the possibility for this “different” person to feel comfortable in any community. Therefore, the presence of any political group that advocates hatred of minorities as well as national, ethnic, religious or other type of exclusiveness cannot be tolerated”.

We congratulate the winners!
