On March 24-26, 2009, Amway and UNICEF, with the assistance of the Ministry of Social Security, the Ministry of Healthcare and the Ministry of Education of the Irkutsk region, are to open three playrooms and one sensor room in four cities in the Irkutsk region: Angarsk, Usoliye-Sibirskoye, Cheremkhovo and Sayansk.

Under the major charitable project “A Child’s Smile” implemented jointly by UNICEF and “Amway”, playrooms and sensor rooms are to be set up and appropriately fitted at medical and social facilities for children all over Russia. On December 15, 2008, a playroom for children opened its doors at Irkutsk regional specialized children’s home No.2.

The fitting of playrooms with special equipment will allow for expansion of psychological and social assistance provided to children, including children from disadvantaged families, who experience difficulties in adapting to the new environment at children’s centers. Children’s presence and activities in comfortable and cozy surroundings under the supervision of skilled and well-trained professionals would help to improve their psycho-emotional health, facilitate their social integration and develop their aesthetic skills, which is most likely to have a positive impact on their health status and personality formation in the future.

A sensor room (a room for psychological stress release) allows for timely and comprehensive psychodiagnostic assessment of children with psychological and speech problems, as well as for building up the potential of current psycho-pedagogical and socio-psychological rehabilitation and speech therapy activities. Thanks to the availability of such a room, the quality of rehabilitation of children with locomotary and intellectual disabilities and speech impairments will be considerably improved.

The duration of the joint UNICEF/Amway project “A Child’s Smile” is three years (2008-2010). During this period, about 60 playrooms and sensor rooms are to be arranged at medical and social facilities for children throughout Russia. Presently, playrooms and sensor rooms have been set up and are successfully operating in the Russian cities of Biysk, Barnaul, St.Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Chelyabinsk, Petrozavodsk, Irkutsk, Samara, Toliyatti, Nizhny Novgorod and Lomonosov (Leningrad region).
